Libraries establish portals to knowledge and imagination while serving as centers for discovery. The traditional function of libraries as knowledge gateways now extends into immersive digital realms through the adoption of virtual reality (VR) in their spaces. Library facilities nationwide are adopting VR technology to generate groundbreaking patron engagement through virtual field trips and interactive STEM activities. Through virtual reality users can journey through ancient Rome explore the human body or step inside a black hole which creates learning possibilities that traditional resources cannot match. VR technology provides immense educational advantages to library users. Students enhance their classroom learning through interactive experiences that render difficult subjects more understandable. A high school student could explore ecosystems through virtual rainforest walks while nursing students examine 3D models of human anatomy. Through VR technology libraries are expanding educational capabilities to boost literacy skills and science learning while supporting vocational training programs. Technology libraries that focus on inclusivity provide free access to VR headsets and other advanced technology which helps bridge the digital divide. Individuals who cannot afford the technology by themselves can use VR access to learn digital skills and discover career options or find a creative outlet. Public libraries throughout Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Antonio have initiated VR programs which include career simulations and storytelling workshops set in 360° environments. The San Diego Public Library employs VR technology to enable seniors to explore the world virtually or relive their childhood memories. What’s Next? The decreasing costs of VR along with content growth will enable libraries to maintain their leadership in providing public access to this technology. During your next library visit request an experience instead of just taking out a book.
