Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling

By Delyssa Story

Digital Storytelling is similar to traditional storytelling, but the incorporation of multimedia tools helps to bring stories to life. These tools can include digital text, images, videos, audio, music or other sounds (Czarnecki 23). This can be a great way to engage your audience, share information, and cover a wide variety of topics, both educational and recreational. Digital storytelling can be useful for libraries to incorporate in their own programs, or as a class to teach patrons how to use it as a tool for their own presentations and uses (Rule 56).

To get started with digital storytelling, one needs a computer with access to media editing software. Fortunately there are many free options these days, such as CapCut, iMovie on Mac computers, and Canva. To make your own digital story, here are the steps that are involved:

  1. Idea: The first step to creating a digital story is deciding on an idea.
  2. Explore: Once a topic has been chosen, the next step is to research and explore more about your idea.
  3. Script: Once your idea is outlined, it’s time to start writing a script for your story.
  4. Storyboard: After your have a script ready, you can make a storyboard to include what other digital elements will be incorporated to your story.
  5. Collect: Next, you will want to collect all of the images, videos, and audio you will be adding to your story.
  6. Combine: Once you have your plan and digital elements ready, its time to put it all together! You can use one of the following video editing tools to create your video and incorporate the multimedia tools you gathered.
  7. Share: To share your digital story, you can use a free website such as youtube.com
